Subnautica 2 on Steam Deck
Subnautica 2 runs on Steam Deck and is widely reported Playable in the community. Valve has not yet granted official "Steam Deck Verified" status as of late May 2026; expect the green badge to land during EA as Unknown Worlds patches input and UI scaling.
Current status
- Steam Deck Verified: ⚠️ Not yet. [uncertain — pending Valve review]
- Community playability: ✅ Playable with adjusted settings.
- Anti-cheat / kernel issues: None reported (no kernel-level AC).
- Cloud saves: Steam Cloud supported — your solo and host saves sync across PC ↔ Deck.
Recommended settings
Community reports converge on a similar set of tweaks for stable Deck performance. Exact options depend on the in-game graphics menu, which has been iterating during EA.
- Resolution: 1280×800 native (Deck panel) — do not upscale beyond panel.
- Frame target: 30 FPS cap for battery and stability; 40 FPS achievable in starter shallows but drops in dense biomes.
- Shadows / volumetrics: Low to Medium. Volumetric water is the biggest GPU cost.
- Foliage / particle density: Medium. Cuts noticeable in Coral Shallows.
- Anti-aliasing: TAA / FSR 2 if available.
- TDP limit: 12–13 W typical; 15 W if you need the headroom in dense biomes.
- Refresh rate: 60 Hz with 30 FPS cap is more battery-efficient than running uncapped.
Battery life
Expect roughly 1.5–2.5 hours of battery at recommended settings, depending on biome and base activity. The Deck OLED extends that by 30–50% over the LCD original. Heavy base building and dense biomes (Coral Shallows, Anemone Hills) draw more power than open water cruising.
Known issues on Deck
- Text size: PDA and HUD text is small at 1280×800. Use the UI Scale slider if available.
- Touch input: Limited at launch — controller mapping is the supported path.
- Long load times: First load into a save can be slow on SD card storage; install on internal NVMe for best results.
- Co-op host on Deck: Workable for 2 players, less reliable for full 4-player host duties — host on a stronger machine if you have one.
Multiplayer issues are tracked at all bugs; tuning tips on the co-op hub.
Steam Deck vs ROG Xbox Ally
The ROG Xbox Ally is supported via the Xbox PC build and benefits from Xbox certification out of the box. The Steam Deck runs via Proton / Steam OS. If you have both, the Deck is the more battery-efficient option; the Ally generally delivers higher peak frame rates with more power.
